PEKAN, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- Work on the coastal erosion control project in Kampung Tanjung Batu, Nenasi, here, which comprises coastal rehabilitation along a 4.3-kilometre (km) stretch and deepening of the Sungai Tering river mouth, has reached 63 per cent progress.
Pahang Local Government, Housing, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff said the project's progress, which is expected to be completed in 2026, is ahead of schedule and is essential to providing convenience and comfort to over 2,000 local residents.
"We want every government project to be completed according to the set period or earlier because the people have the right to benefit from every project implemented.
"Our task is to solve the people's problems and the large government allocation is meaningless if the project fails to be completed, whereas they (the people) are unable to enjoy the facilities," he said.
He said this in a speech read by Pekan district officer Datuk Zaliza Zulkipli today at the 150,000 safe manhours without lost time injury at the project site.
Bebar assemblyman, Mohammad Fakhruddin said the RM58 million project is expected to change the face of Kampung Tanjung Batu and Nenasi when completed while Bukit Tanjung Batu, the location for the sighting of the 'Syawal' moon in Malaysia, will become more popular.
He said it would create more job opportunities for the people and boost the local economy, especially in the fishing and tourism sectors.
"With the construction of this 'training wall,' makes the mouth of the Tering River and its navigation channel safe for fishing boats and suitable for tourism activities.
"Besides that, the beach nourishment work makes Nenasi Beach wider and cleaner will attract local and foreign tourists, thus encouraging the construction of chalets and budget hotels," he explained.
He congratulated Vista Infinity Development Sdn Bhd (Vista), the project's main contractor, for registering a record of 150,000 safe working hours without an incident.
