KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) have activated their respective war room to monitor and manage flood situations nationwide, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said the move is also part of DID’s preparations to manage post-flood issues.
“After floods, stagnant water problems often occur, so we need to ensure the availability of necessary equipment such as pumps,” he told reporters after officiating at the I-Nation Global Summit 2024 here today.
As for TNB, he said the utility company would ensure an uninterrupted power supply, facilitated by the war room’s 24-hour operations.
Fadillah said that the Malaysian Civil Defence Force reported that approximately 153,000 individuals have been affected by floods as of this morning.
Commenting on the summit, Fadillah said discussions included addressing sustainability challenges amid climate change.
“With climate change, we will encounter extreme weather conditions, including floods, storms and strong winds. Therefore, we need to explore ways to ensure national sustainability and public safety.
“By leveraging science, we hope to make predictions, which can help reduce disaster risks and better prepare the public for any eventualities,” he said.
Asked about Malaysia’s priorities as ASEAN Chair next year, the deputy prime minister said these include efforts to advance the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
“We will look at how to translate green technology and renewable energy into collective ASEAN commitment to ensure environmental sustainability,” he said.
