MANILA, Dec 4 (Bernama-PNA) -- The Philippines and Malaysia's aviation authorities have partnered to enhance search and rescue (SAR) operations, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported, citing the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

CAAP said it met with its Malaysian counterpart on Wednesday to establish a SAR working group to exchange best practices.

"The Philippines actively participates in regional SAR initiatives, such as the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER), and works closely with neighbouring countries for cross-border SAR operations," CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told the PNA.

Together with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) as its new partner, the group aims to develop strategies and improve coordination for aeronautical SAR operations.

According to CAAP, the partnership is expected to strengthen the region’s capability to respond effectively to emergencies and foster closer ties between the two nations.

It added that the collaboration underscores the shared commitment of the Philippines and Malaysia to addressing SAR challenges, enhancing regional cooperation, and ensuring aviation safety and security across their territories.

Prior to this partnership, Apolonio said CAAP had also signed agreements with Japan, the United States, and Australia for capacity building and technical assistance.

Meanwhile, Apolonio said CAAP ensures that SAR operations comply with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

He added that the Philippines’ aeronautical SAR operations emphasise inter-agency coordination and community involvement.
