SEOUL, Dec 5 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- South Korea’s army chief Gen Park An-su said Thursday he had tendered his resignation to former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun over President Yoon Suk Yeol's abrupt imposition of emergency martial law, but the president rejected his offer.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, Park had been named to lead the short-lived martial law command after Yoon unexpectedly declared emergency martial law late Tuesday but subsequently lifted it hours later as the opposition-controlled National Assembly voted to reject it.
Park made the revelation during an emergency session of the parliamentary defense committee, saying he offered to resign the previous day.
Yoon, however, turned down Park's resignation offer, citing the security situation, according to the presidential office.
"Yoon stressed the need for stable military operations amid the grave security situation and urged the Army chief of staff to fully focus on his duties," a senior presidential official said.
