SHAH ALAM, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) collected RM844 million in tithes this year from 322,000 individual payers and corporate companies.

Its chief executive officer Mohd Sabirin Mohd Sarbini said business tithe was the main contributor, with RM176 million collected from January to November.

He said that, with the growing number of Muslim entrepreneurs, the LZS was aiming to collect RM191 million in business tithes this year.

“Despite the increase in the collection, the true potential of eligible tithe payers is still large, and based on that factor, we are optimistic about targeting a business zakat collection of RM191 million.

“With the number of asnaf now exceeding 73,000 heads of households and expected to keep growing in Selangor, this tithe collection target serves as a benchmark for LZS to work hard to meet the needs of asnaf,” he said during a tithe presentation ceremony here today.

During the same event, LZS received business tithe contributions amounting to RM21.2 million from 47 companies.

According to Mohd Sabirin, the tithe presentation not only symbolised the companies’ commitment to paying tithe but also served as an inspiration for other organisations to contribute towards helping those in need.

LZS also distributed RM15.97 million in tithe assistance, which included aid for the disabled, dialysis treatments, bursaries for students in Egypt and Jordan, home repairs, house rental support, and monthly financial assistance to eligible recipients.
