KUALA BERANG, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- An elderly woman was forced to wade through water for 300 metres while carrying her grandchild to escape from her home after it was hit by flood waters this morning.
Semek Mohamad, 60, from Kampung Nibong, said her house began to flood and the water level reached chest height by 7 am, following continuous heavy rain since the previous morning.
With no other option, she and five other family members decided to brave the floodwaters as the water level rose rapidly and unexpectedly. Semek said she did not have time to move electrical appliances such as the washing machine and coconut grater in the kitchen, as she was concerned about not being able to save herself in time.
According to Semek, this was the second time her home had been affected by flooding this year, causing thousands of ringgit in losses due to damaged electrical appliances, furniture, and plants.
The Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that, as of 2 pm, 285 flood victims from 83 families were sheltered in seven temporary relief centres (PPS) in the Hulu Terengganu district while five PPS housed 238 victims from 63 families in Besut.
"At first, my children and I wanted to wait for help from the security personnel. But the water rose so quickly, and we had no choice but to leave and seek assistance," she said.
"We had no other choice but to walk through the flood waters. I carried my one-year-old grandson, while my two daughters carried my seven and four year-old grandchildren," she said when met at the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Nibong today.
