MPI PRESIDENT URGES JOURNALISTS TO WELCOME AI AS A VALUABLE PARTNER

KUCHING, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Journalists and the media industry should not fear the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) but instead embrace it as a valuable partner in overcoming challenges, Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president Datuk Yong Soo Heong said.

He said AI should be seen as a ‘friend’ that helps those in the industry become better journalists, writers and presenters.

The veteran newsman said one of the main benefits of AI is its ability to streamline the time-consuming process of gathering information from records.

“AI can help shorten the time spent on your workload. In the past, a journalist working with an organisation had to go through records of news clippings to gain a better background for news stories and analytical pieces.

“These days, you no longer need to do that because AI can be your friend, augmenting your efforts and speeding up the process,” he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the ‘Artificial Intelligence: Empowering Journalists on Content and Newsroom Management’ training programme here today.

Coordinated by the MPI, the two-day programme, which concluded today, included modules on using AI for editing, automated writing and data analysis in journalism.
