ALOR GAJAH, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM), Melaka branch, aims to construct five new houses and repair five others under the Fishermen's Housing Special Project (PKPN), this year, with a total allocation of RM520,000.
State Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee chairman, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, explained that this initiative aims to provide resettlement with essential infrastructure, ensuring that fishermen's families can enjoy an improved and more comfortable quality of life.
“This aid for low-income fishermen is part of the three main components of PKPN: repairing fishermen’s houses, constructing new homes, and relocating houses," he said.
In 2024, LKIM received ten applications for the repair of fishermen's houses, all of which have been completed at a cost of RM130,000, across the state.
Earlier, Dr Muhammad Akmal met with fisherman, Mamat Yusof, a recipient of house repair assistance under the PKPN in Teluk Gong, during the Kuala Linggi state constituency's People’s Representative for the People (WRUR) programme.
Also present at the event was LKIM's deputy director-general (Development), Rashima Baharuddin.
Elaborating further, Muhamad Akmal emphasised that LKIM will remain proactive in its role as an agency dedicated to enhancing the socio-economic well-being of fishermen.
He said that the focus would remain on boosting fishermen’s income and advancing the development of the nation’s fisheries industry, while ensuring a consistent fish supply across the country.
“Moreover, various forms of assistance, including support to improve fishing equipment (touchpoint), disaster relief, and other welfare initiatives, will continue, as part of our ongoing commitment to the fishermen’s welfare,” he added.
