BIDEN UNVEILS NEW EXPORT RESTRICTIONS ON US-MADE AI TECHNOLOGY

13/01/2025 08:36 PM

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Bernama-dpa) -- Outgoing US President Joe Biden has unveiled new export restrictions on artificial intelligence technology, including on chips and AI models used for software, reported the German news agency dpa.

A group of 120 partner countries would be exempt from the restrictions, which were announced just a week before Biden leaves office and could still change following input by experts and industry insiders.

The US is the world leader in the development of AI and the chips needed for the technology, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo told reporters, adding that the planned export restrictions were designed to keep it that way.

US-made AI technologies could be used by rival countries for nuclear simulations, the development of biological weapons, and to strengthen militaries, she warned.

With the new measures, the Biden administration wants to ensure that the US' opponents do not get their hands on the technologies – while also allowing partners to benefit, Raimondo said.

The US government has already restricted exports of AI chips to China, a step felt by US firm Nvidia, a leader in AI chipmaking.

Nvidia's chip systems are used around the world to train applications using artificial intelligence. Heavyweights such as Google and the Meta group use them to fill entire data centres – but AI start-ups such as the company behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, also rely on them.
