DENMARK'S KING FREDERIK MARKS ONE YEAR ON THE THRONE

15/01/2025 01:46 PM

COPENHAGEN, Jan 15 (Bernama-dpa) -- Frederik X of Denmark, 56, reflected on the emotional transition of the throne with personal words on Tuesday, reported German news agency (dpa).

"To succeed my mother without having to bid farewell at the same time was and remains a great privilege," the son of Queen Margrethe II, who abdicated a year ago, wrote on Instagram and Facebook.

"Jan 14, 2024, was an emotional and unforgettable day from start to finish."

The royal household released several impressions of Frederik and his family taken behind the scenes shortly before the transition to his reign.

Frederik soon afterwards stepped onto the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen amidst the cheers of a massive crowd, where Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed him the new king.

The transition marked the most significant change in decades in the Danish royal family, which is extremely popular.

Margrethe had unexpectedly announced during her New Year's Eve speech on Dec 31, 2023, that after reigning for 52 years, she would pass the throne to her son, Frederik.

Such abdications are exceedingly uncommon in the kingdom of Denmark, as in other Scandinavian monarchies. Normally, the successor assumes the throne only after the reigning head of state has died.
