JAKARTA, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to ASEAN’s digital future by endorsing the Bangkok Digital Declaration, which was adopted at the 5th ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN) in Bangkok, Thailand.

The declaration highlights the shared commitment of ASEAN member states to create a secure, innovative, and inclusive digital environment across the region, according to a statement from Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.

Key initiatives in the declaration include strengthening regional cooperation to fight online fraud, promoting trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) governance, and enhancing access to high-quality Internet.

The two-day ADGMIN meeting, chaired by Thailand for 2025, concluded on Friday, also attended by Malaysia’s Minister of Communications and Digital, Gobind Singh Deo.

Speaking at the meeting, Indonesia’s Communication and Digital Affairs Minister, Meutya Hafid, highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in ASEAN’s digital transformation.

“Indonesia fully supports the measures outlined in the Bangkok Digital Declaration, which align with our vision to promote digital inclusion and foster technological innovation,” she said.

She added that digital transformation must benefit all segments of society, particularly those in remote areas.

Meutya also emphasised Indonesia’s Digital Vision initiative, which aims to expand connectivity, improve digital literacy, and develop technology talent.

“This initiative aligns with the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 and strengthens ASEAN’s role as a global digital economy hub, projected to be worth trillions of dollars by 2030,” she noted.

On the sidelines of the meeting, she met with Singapore’s Digital and Information Development Minister, Josephine Teo, to discuss child protection policies in the digital space.

Earlier, Meutya also discussed strategies to safeguard children in digital environments with President Prabowo Subianto at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, following Australia’s recent ban on social media access for children under 16.

She briefed the president on various digital transformation initiatives, including e-government systems, and stressed the need for stronger regulations to protect children online.
