NEW YORK, Jan 20 (Bernama-WAFA) -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Monday that 92 per cent of homes in the Gaza Strip, or about 436,000 homes, were destroyed or damaged as a result of the Israeli aggression, while 90 per cent of Palestinian civilians were displaced from their homes.
Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported the WHO Representative in Palestine, Rick Peeperkorn, said: “The ceasefire announcement is a source of hope, but the challenge ahead is daunting.
He added that addressing the enormous needs and restoring the health system will be a complex and difficult task, given the scale and complexity of the operations and the constraints involved.
The ceasefire in the Gaza Strip came into effect on Sunday at 11.15 am, after being delayed for more than two and a half hours, due to the occupation authorities’ announcement that it would not be implemented before receiving the list of female prisoners scheduled for release.
Since Oct 7, 2023, the occupation forces have launched an aggression on the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the killing of at least 46,913 Palestinians, including 17,581 children and about 12,048 women, and the injury of more than 110,750 others, while about 11,000 are still missing under the rubble and in the streets.
