GEORGE TOWN, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Penang are ready to host several other sports, apart from snooker and billiards, in conjunction with the 2027 SEA Games, as there are existing facilities suitable for other events in the state.
State Youth, Sports and Health chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the state needs to discuss the matter in detail with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) as several other states are also jointly organising the SEA Games.
"Previously, an estimated allocation of RM15 million had been prepared to help organise the 2027 SEA Games, but I am still waiting for the main organising committee meeting (to organise the SEA Games) for us to discuss the prospect of hosting other sports like badminton at the Setia Spice Arena, Bayan Lepas because it is a closed arena that is indeed suitable.
"We are confident that the allocation provided is actually for more than one or two events that we can host, especially with the facilities available in the state and also in addition to direct flights and hospitality in Penang," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after the Penang State Government's Sports Winning Incentive Scheme Presentation Ceremony for the 2024 Sarawak Para SUKMA XXI medalists at Dewan Seri Pinang, here.
On Nov 26, the media reported that the Penang State Government through the decision of the Government Executive Council meeting agreed to allocate RM15 million for hosting snooker and billiards events which are expected to take place in the state during the 2027 SEA Games.
Meanwhile, Gooi said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow had approved an allocation of RM104,000 as incentives for winners of medals during the 2024 Sarawak Para SUKMA XXI.
He said the incentives were given to medal winners who competed in various sports including Para Swimming, Para Athletics, Para Tenpin Bowling, Para Archery, Para Bowling, Para Powerlifting, Para Badminton and Boccia.
"The support is proof of the state government's commitment in appreciating the efforts of our athletes who have fought hard to make the state proud," he said.
At the biennial games, Penang brought home nine gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals.
