JAKARTA, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised the importance of a professional press with integrity, describing it as a valuable asset to the nation.

Speaking on the occasion of Indonesia’s 79th National Press Day (Hari Pers Nasional), he acknowledged the challenges faced by the media, both domestically and internationally.

He urged media practitioners to prioritise the interests of the nation, the state, and the people while remaining vigilant against attempts to manipulate public opinion through financial influence.

“There is a tendency worldwide for those with large financial power to dominate the media and influence the societies of certain countries,” he stated.

His remarks were delivered in a message released by the Presidential Secretariat’s Press, Media, and Information Bureau (BPMI).

While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to press freedom, the President also warned against the dangers of fake news, hatred, mistrust among citizens, and efforts to sow division within the country.

“The press must always be dynamic, responsible, and have an understanding of what serves the interests of the nation,” he said.

Prabowo extended his congratulations to all members of the press in Indonesia, recognising their vital role in upholding democracy and providing accurate information to the public for eight decades.

“I deeply appreciate the dedication of journalists and media professionals who continue their work with unwavering commitment, despite facing increasingly complex challenges,” he added.

Indonesia’s media industry began in 1937 with the establishment of the ANTARA news agency on Dec 13.

Over the years, it grew rapidly, playing a crucial role in advancing the struggle for independence and voicing the aspirations of the people.

To honour the media’s contribution, President Soeharto declared Feb 9 as National Press Day (Hari Pers Nasional) in 1985, a day now commemorated annually across the country.
