KUALA BERANG, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- The federal government, through the Ministry of Economy, has allocated RM16 million to the Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH) for the restoration of Pulau Petang in Tasik Kenyir here.

KETENGAH chairman, Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, announced that the funds, disbursed late last year, have completed the documentation phase and are now in the process of appointing a contractor.

The project aims to revive 50 abandoned resort rooms on the island, incorporating solar energy solutions. Additionally, plans include repairing the bridge leading to the Kelah Sanctuary, which has been damaged for several years, and constructing medium-class houseboats to enhance tourism offerings.

"We also plan to plant Musang King durian trees sourced from Raub, Pahang. If the yield is substantial, we can commercialise it; otherwise, visitors here can enjoy the fruit," Ahmad said during a media visit to the island here today.

The project is expected to commence mid-year and will take between eight to twelve months to complete.

Pulau Petang, spanning eight hectares, previously served various purposes, including hosting courses and state executive council meetings, but has been neglected since 2021

Ahmad added that although the island is under KETENGAH's ownership, collaboration with the state government is essential to maintain and enhance the island's quality and appeal.
