KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Despite the growing importance and vast potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media industry, experts believe this rapidly evolving technology still requires oversight from professional journalists, as human expertise cannot be entirely replaced.

AI has proven its ability to enhance news production processes, from streamlining content delivery to driving innovation across the industry.

Despite these advantages, the growing reliance on AI has brought security concerns to the forefront of the media industry's priorities.

Dr Claymond Lim Wei Xiang, the AIGC Architect of Huawei Cloud Malaysia, emphasised that the 'security issue' will remain the top priority for the media industry in the next five years, underscoring the urgent need for a clear roadmap for AI implementation.

He said that while various AI technologies are available worldwide, the media industry must ensure safety, addressing issues such as hacking and the accuracy of news.

"My conclusion is that AI is merely a tool and cannot be fully relied upon," he told Bernama after the panel session held in conjunction with the four-day 54th OANA Executive Board Meeting, which began on Sunday (Feb 16).

As one of the panellists of the discussion, Lim, who is also a solutions engineer, noted that news agencies are progressing in the "right direction". He suggested exploring partnerships with universities and researchers to explore the future trends of media development.

"This is not just about security. It is also about reviewing the entire AI application process from an end-to-end perspective – from Proof of Concept (POC) to final implementation. How do we plan these projects? How do we manage them? This is what we call a roadmap," he explained.

In an earlier panel discussion themed "Evolving Newsrooms: Building Digital-First, Audience-Centric Approach to Stay Ahead", Lim said the news industry is in a constant state of evolution, and embracing digital technologies and audience-centric strategies is crucial for success.

He explained that AI technology presents both opportunities and challenges that must be addressed carefully.

“Newsrooms that adapt and innovate will be the ones that thrive in the future,” he said.

Lim also said that from the Huawei Cloud's point of view, its new security features and AI features were built by the information and technology team and put into the in-house model.

“This balance between the security and more professional for users. The security and usability need to be more balanced,” he added.

Also in attendance were Bernama’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Editor-in-Chief, Arul Rajoo Durar Raj; and Executive Editor for International News Service, Mohd Shukri Ishak, who is currently performing the duties of Deputy Editor-in-Chief.

The event was attended by OANA’s Secretary General, Zaman Rezakhani, who also serves as the Director of International Relations at the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), along with representatives from 13 international news agencies.
