ISTANBUL, Feb 23 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- New York City filed a federal lawsuit Friday against the Trump administration over the abrupt withdrawal of US$80 million in emergency funding intended for migrant assistance, according to court documents, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
The funds, disbursed on Feb 4, 2025, were clawed back one week later “unlawfully” and without notice or explanation, the city alleges, arguing the move violates federal regulations and grant terms.
The lawsuit, filed by the New York City Law Department, seeks a temporary restraining order, preliminary injunction, and permanent injunction to recover the funds and prevent similar actions in the future.
City officials contend that the federal government’s actions undermine congressionally approved programmes designed to aid local governments in managing migrant crises.
“Without a doubt, our immigration system is broken, but the cost of managing an international humanitarian crisis should not overwhelmingly fall onto one city alone,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement on the city’s official website.
Muriel Goode-Trufant, the city’s corporation counsel, added that the Trump administration’s actions were unjustified and violated legal obligations.
The controversy follows accusations by Elon Musk and others that the city misused Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds for “luxury hotels” for migrants. City officials have denied the claims, stating that the rates paid were reasonable and in line with authorised programmes.
