JAKARTA, March 4 (Bernama) -- Severe flooding has hit Indonesia’s Jabodetabek metropolitan area, including Jakarta, Bogor, Bekasi, and Tangerang, displacing over 1,000 people and submerging hundreds of houses.
Heavy rainfall has paralysed daily activities, while rescue teams work to evacuate residents as landslides and flooded roads hamper relief efforts.
Reports from local TV indicated that flooding has affected houses, lower-floor buildings, parking lots, markets, and malls, leading to traffic congestion.
The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) confirmed that areas in South and East Jakarta have seen floodwaters reach heights of up to 300 centimetres, displacing over 1,000 people and affecting 323 houses.
According to the spokesperson of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, authorities in Bogor are working with residents to clear debris from the floodwaters.
“A total of 346 people remain in two evacuation centres. Initial assessments show that 204 houses were affected and one bridge destroyed,” he said in a statement.
In Tangerang’s Pagedangan area, Banten province, 350 houses were impacted by flooding from the overflowing Cimanceuri river, with significant damage persisting even as the waters began to recede.
Abdul Muhari reported that flooding has severely affected Bekasi City, submerging several districts in East Bekasi, North Bekasi, South Bekasi, Medan Satria, Jatiasih, Pondok Gede, and Rawalumbu.
“Water levels in the affected houses ranged from 150 to 200 centimetres, and over 150 houses were flooded. Bekasi City authorities have cut off power in multiple areas to prevent electrocution hazards,” he said.
In Bekasi Regency, heavy rainfall and overflow from upstream rivers have flooded Cibarusah, Serang Baru, Setu, North Cikarang, Cibitung, and North Tambun districts, leaving residents stranded in rising waters.
“As the floodwaters begin to recede, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and recovery efforts are ongoing,” Abdul Muhari added.
