TOKYO, Jan 10 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Heavy snow may fall across a wide swath of Japan over the three-day holiday weekend, the country’s weather agency said Friday, warning of strong winds and high waves along the Sea of Japan coast and northern Japan.
The government called for public vigilance and urged local governments to prepare for disruptions to lifelines, Kyodo News reported.
Japan Meteorological Agency expects snowfall of up to 100 centimetres in northeastern Tohoku and up to 50 cm in parts of Hokuriku and Chugoku within the 24 hours through 6 pm. Sunday.
Monday is Coming of Age Day, a national holiday in Japan.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in a post on X, "Please do not hesitate to take action sooner (rather than later) to protect your life," as a liaison office was set up to gather information and monitor the situation.
