ARAU, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 300 students of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) received RM90,000 in zakat assistance under the UniMAP–MAIPs Peduli 2026 programme, to help ease financial pressures and support student welfare.

UniMAP vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Zaliman Sauli said 280 students from seven faculties were selected by the Student Affairs Department (JHEP), while the Centre for Islamic and Human Development (PIMPIN) identified 20 Tahfiz technical and vocational education and training (TVET) students.

“This zakat assistance is a trust that must be managed transparently to ensure it delivers meaningful impact to the recipients,” he said at the Zakat Distribution Ceremony held at UniMAP’s Alam Campus, Pauh Putra, here today.

At the event, Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu Perlis (MAIPs) chief executive officer Mohd Nazim Mohd Noor presented a mock cheque worth RM90,000 to Zaliman, witnessed by the Raja Muda of Perlis and UniMAP Chancellor, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, and the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis and UniMAP Pro-Chancellor, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

Zaliman said the assistance reflects the university’s commitment to supporting students amid rising living costs and ensuring continuity in education.

He added that 1,254 UniMAP students received more than RM687,000 in MAIPs zakat assistance last year, while zakat salary contributions rose to RM1.77 million in 2025, an increase of 16.8 per cent, enabling broader distribution in 2026.
