KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Bowling pair Syabil Azam Syamsul Azam–Ho Choon Seong were named Sportsmen of the Year at the 2025 Deaf Sports Awards here today.
Syabil Azam–Choon Seong received the recognition following their outstanding achievement in winning the gold medal in the men’s doubles event at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics last November.
Syabil Azam described the award as a meaningful milestone in his bowling career.
“For the first time, I have been named the national deaf sportsman, and this means a great deal to me as it allows me to make my parents proud,” he told reporters after the awards ceremony.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari and Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) president Ong Shin Ruenn.
Commenting on their next plans, Choon Seong said they would continue to improve their performance ahead of several upcoming tournaments, including the Asia-Pacific competition in Penang in the near future.
Meanwhile, the achievement of winning the women’s doubles silver medal in bowling at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics brought success to the pairing of Huwainaa Danduan Abdullah–Nor Misha Nathera Mackery, who were named Sportswomen of the Year at the 2025 Deaf Sports Awards.
Huwainaa expressed hope that the recognition would further motivate them to elevate their performance and pursue greater success in bringing glory to the nation in the future.
Former Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who currently serves as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), as well as Sarawak Minister for Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, were also honoured with Special Awards.
