13/03/2026 05:02 PM

ISTANBUL, March 13 (Bernama-dpa) -- A magnitude-5.5 earthquake shook the Turkish province of Tokat in the north of the country during the night, the disaster management agency AFAD said on Friday morning.

The tremor was also felt in the neighbouring provinces of Samsun, Amasya, Ordu and Sivas, AFAD said, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The earthquake occurred at 3.35 am (0035 GMT) at a depth of 6.37 kilometres.

There are currently no negative impacts, AFAD stated.

Schools and kindergartens in Tokat will remain closed for one day, the Tokat governor's office announced on X.

Turkiye is home to numerous faults, which are tectonic fractures or breakpoints in the rock. The metropolis of Istanbul, in particular, is highly prone to earthquakes.
