KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 (Bernama) -- The spirit of unity and harmony among Malaysia’s multi-racial society continues to be strengthened through the organisation of the ‘Ziarah MADANI Ihya Ramadan’ programme in the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency, which brought together more than 3,000 local residents from various backgrounds.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the programme was not just a platform to engage with the community in conjunction with RamadaN, but also reflected the spirit of togetherness is at the core of the Malaysia MADANI concept.
“I was confident that this programme would be a success, but I did not expect such an extraordinary response,” he said at the ‘Ziarah MADANI Ihya Ramadan’ programme in Kota Damansara, Selangor, today.
Ramanan said the harmony enjoyed by Malaysians so far must continue to be preserved despite attempts by certain parties to incite hate via social media.
Meanwhile, he also emphasised the importance of prudent austerity measures as preparation for global economic uncertainties.
He cited the approach of Thailand, which has implemented several cost-saving measures in preparation for possible economic challenges, including encouraging the use of stairs in public offices and raising the air-conditioning temperature to around 26 degrees Celcius to sae electricity.
“We need to start implementing these cost-saving measures. If the government itself does not implement them, it will be difficut for the people to follow suit,” he said.
He also drew attention to the issue of food waste, which has reached about 12,000 tonnes per month, especially during festive seasons, and urged the public to be more prudent in their spending.
Earlier, at the event, Ramanan engaged with the local community through the distribution of bubur lambuk and the presentation of 1,000 MADANI baskets containing essential items to families in need.
In addition, contributions totallilng RM20,000 were presented to three orphanages and a tahfiz centre as part of HRD Corp’s ongoing commitment to help the needy.
