MELAKA, March 15 (Bernama) -- The government has expanded the Sejati MADANI grants this year to youth societies to develop entrepreneurial activities capable of generating income, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said.

A total of RM250 million has been allocated by the government specifically for this purpose and that the Registrar of Youth Organisations (RoY) would hold roadshows nationwide to brief about 2,500 youth associations on how to apply for the grants, he added.

"If previously, Sejati MADANI grants were given to Village Development and Security Committees and such, this year, we have expanded it to youth societies because we believe that the youth today are business-minded and they have plans to develop their societies,” he told reporters after officiating the Melaka-level Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan programme at Al-Abrar Mosque in Semabok here today.

Melaka Youth Development, Sports and Non-governmental Organisations Committee chairman Datuk V P Shanmugam and Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem were also present at the event.

He also shared that relevant parties were deciding the number of sports that will be contested at the 34th SEA Games scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur next year.

Even though there are 38 sports that will be contested, the appeal process to add other sports is still ongoing, he said.

"I will officially announce the number of sports being contested at the SEA Games at a later date after all matters have been studied and resolved,” he added.
