KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 (Bernama) -- Traffic congestion was reported on major highways nationwide as at 8.30 pm tonight, following a surge in vehicles as city dwellers returned from their hometowns.
A Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) spokesperson said the congestion stemmed from heavy traffic flow from the North, South and East Coast heading towards the federal capital.
“For the North-South Expressway (PLUS) E1, the most severe congestion was observed on the southbound stretch from Alor Pongsu to North Taiping, spanning 18 kilometres due to high traffic volume.
“In the southern sector, congestion was reported along a 14-kilometre stretch from Ayer Keroh to Simpang Ampat, with delays of up to 40 minutes,” he said when contacted by Bernama tonight.
In addition, traffic in the southbound direction towards Kuala Lumpur was reported to be slow at several locations, including Bukit Gambir to Jasin and Pedas Linggi to Senawang.
“However, traffic at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza has been reported to remain smooth so far,” he said.
For motorists from the East Coast using the East Coast Expressway (LPT), severe congestion was reported along a 25-kilometre stretch from the Karak Toll Plaza to Lintang.
“Traffic is also reported to be moving slowly from Genting Sempah towards the Gombak Toll Plaza en route to the federal capital,” he said.
According to the spokesperson, the West Coast Expressway (WCE) is also experiencing congestion, particularly around the Hutan Melintang Toll Plaza towards Sabak Bernam, with traffic moving slowly up to Jalan Persekutuan.
The LLM has advised motorists to remain patient and exercise caution, as traffic is expected to remain heavy until late tonight as people head back to work tomorrow.
