RUSSIAN COURT BANS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE-WINNING RIGHTS GROUP MEMORIAL

09/04/2026 08:21 PM

MOSCOW, April 9 (Bernama-dpa) -- Russia's Supreme Court has banned Memorial, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights organisation, state media reported on Thursday, according to German Press Agency (dpa).

The group was classified by the court as extremist, and was banned from doing any work in Russia with immediate effect, state news agency TASS stated.

Memorial has carried out nearly four decades of historical and human rights work in Russia and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.

The Russian authorities have been cracking down on the organisation for some time.

In 2021, its central structures in Moscow were dissolved following a controversial court ruling and many staff members were forced into exile.

The hearing was held behind closed doors.
