GEORGE TOWN, April 10 (Bernama) — The Shopee Rai Lokal Community Tour, a partnership with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM), is gaining ground, helping women earn income and reach global markets through the digital economy.
Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying said the initiative, launched in 2025, is key to helping women adapt to technology and expand their digital entrepreneurship, regardless of location or background.
In today's fast-growing digital economy, mastering technology is not optional. It's a necessity for women to stay competitive, she said.
"E-commerce platforms like Shopee have created vast opportunities for women entrepreneurs to sell locally and globally.
"Through Shopee Rai Lokal Community Tour, Shopee has brought digital and entrepreneurial training directly to communities, including rural areas," Lim said at the launch of "Women Go Digital with Shopee: From Home to Global Market" at Komtar today. Also present was Shopee Malaysia's head of Corporate Affairs, Nadia Anwar.
Lim said this approach boosts digital literacy and opens new economic opportunities for women. Over 50 per cent of sellers on Shopee are women-owned businesses, proof of their huge potential in e-commerce.
She added that the effort aligns with this year's International Women's Day theme, "Empower Women, Strengthen the Nation," which places women's economic power at the heart of national development.
Lim said KPWKM is pushing this agenda through the National Women's Policy and the Women's Development Action Plan 2025–2030, focusing on economy, leadership, safety, and well-being, with programmes such as KIRANA, Women@IDEAS, and LAWA.
Nadia said the Shopee Rai Lokal Community Tour is a ground-level initiative tailored to local needs, focused on empowering women in digital business to improve their lives through e-commerce.
The programme trains beginners to experienced sellers on platform use, marketing techniques, live streaming and video to boost sales. It also offers side income through affiliate programmes. The initiative is open to all, with Shopee providing ongoing training both in person and online.
Earlier, some 150 women attended today's programme, which also featured the Shopee Women's Aspiration Award 2026, presented to two individuals for outstanding success on the platform.
