BEIJING, May 17 (Bernama) -- The news media play an important role in helping the international community gain first-hand insight into developments in China and fostering greater understanding of the country’s progress, particularly through journalists participating in the China International Press Communication Centre (CIPCC) 2026 programme.

CIPCC coordinator Wei Longyu said participants also play a key role in shaping global perspectives through their coverage of international and regional multilateral events hosted by China.

“Another important aspect is that journalists can help shape global discourse. Through the participation of Global South journalists in the CIPCC programme, they are able to share Global South perspectives on multilateral events held in China,” he told Bernama in an exclusive interview.

The CIPCC 2026 programme, organised by the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA), brings together 85 media practitioners from various countries for a three-month media exchange fellowship in Beijing. The programme’s orientation session was held on Friday.

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) journalist Siti Zanariah Nor Zin has been selected as Malaysia’s sole media representative for the programme.

Participants will undergo a series of activities, including journalism training, diplomatic programmes, cultural immersion, official visits within and outside Beijing, as well as practical attachments at major Chinese media organisations.

Wei said the CIPCC media exchange and training programme provides participants with opportunities to build connections with Chinese society and Global South audiences through their reporting.

“Some CIPCC participants are from smaller countries and may be the only journalists representing their nations. Their coverage of official events in China may be the main source of information for audiences back home,” he said.

He added that the programme also enables media practitioners from different regions, including Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America, to exchange perspectives and gain a broader understanding of one another.
