KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The cultural heritage and spirit of unity embodied in the Gawai Day celebration must continue to be preserved to maintain Sarawak's uniqueness as a state rich in cultural diversity, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

He said Gawai Day is one of the most important traditional celebrations for the Dayak community and serves as a symbol of the cultural diversity that Sarawak takes pride in.

“I hope we will continue to appreciate and preserve this cultural treasure while strengthening the spirit of unity, mutual respect and harmony among all races to maintain Sarawak’s uniqueness, which is enriched by its cultural diversity.

“This celebration not only marks the end of the harvest season but also reflects the cultural heritage, customs and noble values passed down through generations and preserved to this day,” he said in a Facebook post today.

At the same time, Tiong reminded the public to prioritise safety throughout the festive celebration and holiday season.

“If you consume tuak or alcohol, do so in moderation and responsibly. Always remember never to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as it endangers both yourself and others.

“For those returning to their hometowns or travelling to any destination during this holiday season, please observe traffic regulations and drive carefully and responsibly,” he said.

Tiong also extended Gawai Day greetings to the entire Dayak community celebrating the festival.
