KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) has appointed Professor Mohamed Shamji as its president for the 2026-2028 term, marking a leadership transition as the organisation advances its Vision Zero initiative to reduce the global burden of allergy and asthma.

The appointment was announced at the conclusion of the EAACI Congress 2026 in Istanbul, which attracted 7,429 delegates from 110 countries and featured 2,420 scientific abstracts on allergy, asthma and clinical immunology, according to a statement.

Professor Mohamed succeeds Professor María José Torres, whose presidency focused on strengthening scientific collaboration, international engagement and the advancement of EAACI's Vision Zero ambition.

In his inaugural remarks, Mohamed outlined plans to expand EAACI's global reach by connecting researchers, healthcare professionals and patients through a more integrated platform for education, scientific exchange, clinical guidance and digital engagement.

Held under the theme "Vision Zero: A Future Free from Allergy and Asthma Burden", the four-day congress highlighted developments in precision medicine, immunotherapy, disease prevention, environmental health, digital innovation and patient-centred care.

The event brought together clinicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, patient representatives and industry partners to discuss emerging challenges and opportunities in allergy and respiratory disease management.

Delegates also examined how advances in science and technology can be translated into improved patient outcomes while supporting broader goals of prevention, innovation and equitable access to care.

EAACI said the scientific findings, partnerships and collaborations established during the meeting are expected to influence future research, clinical practice and healthcare policy worldwide under the organisation's new leadership.
