FIJI TO BAN SOCIAL MEDIA USE BY TEENAGERS UNDER 16

SUVA, June 22 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Fiji is making progress in its efforts to raise the minimum age for social media use to 16, reported Xinhua.

The country's Social Media Age Deferment Taskforce held its second meeting in Suva on Monday, during which discussions focused on finalising the taskforce's terms of reference and advancing plans to present the proposed legislation to Parliament later this year.

While addressing the meeting, Information, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lynda Tabuya noted that Fiji continues to closely monitor developments in countries that have already introduced, or are pursuing, similar restrictions on children’s access to social media.

She stressed that any restrictions introduced in Fiji must be tailored to the country's unique cultural and social context.

The minister emphasised that a whole-of-society approach would be critical to ensuring the success of the proposed legislation, with government agencies, parents, educators, communities, and industry stakeholders all playing a role in protecting children online.

Online Safety Commission and the Fiji Law Reform Commission will work alongside the Fijian government to deliver a bill to Parliament later this year that would introduce a minimum social media access age of 16, Tabuya said.
