KUCHING, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- “Please help me, I beg you, find my son and the others,” pleaded Zunita Sedini to a friend, identified only as Mohd Azra , after knowing that her son, Yusuf Islam, 21, was among the 47 Malaysians detained by the authorities in Cambodia since Dec 16.
Zunita, 45, said had it not been because of Mohd Azra, also known as “Uncle Azra”, she would still not know about her son’s condition.
“He is a hero. When I pleaded with him to look for my son, he went alone (to Cambodia) to look for Yusuf at several locations, but was not able to trace him (Yusuf) and came home.
“I cried and prayed everyday for my son, as well as for others detained with him. Azra then went to Cambodia again and this time he received a call from Yusuf who said he and the other Malaysians were at a location known as BMC,” she told reporters at her house in Petra Jaya, here today.
Zunita said based on the location provided by her son, Azra went to the place, but found Yusuf and the other Malaysians not there.
“Apparently, Yusuf and the other detainees had been taken to another place, as informed by Yusuf when he called Azra for the second time,” she added.
However, she said Azra was not able to meet Yusuf and the other Malaysian detainees at the new location as his application was rejected by the authorities there.
“It was only when Azra went there again with officers from the Malaysian Embassy that he was able to meet them. They (detainees) were good, only problem is the food. They were afraid to eat for fear that the food provided to them is not halal,” she added.
Zunita said Azra left to Cambodian again today, for the sixth time, and had brought along some food to be given to Yusuf and the other detainees.
While expressing her gratitude to Azra for helping to find her son, Zunita also thanked the government fro its assistance and hoped that her son and the other detainees could be released soon.
A total of 47 Malaysians aged 19 to 44 were detained in a jail in Banteay Mancheay, about 446 kilometres from Phnom Penh.
They were believed to have been duped by an employment agency with offers of lucrative salary to sell electronic goods.
