Time to assess regional economic corridors - MIER Chairman

13/03/2019 07:00 PM

PUTRAJAYA, March 13 (Bernama) -- It is timely to evaluate the five regional economic corridors launched during the tenure of the fifth prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) chairman Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob.

The five economic corridors are Iskandar Malaysia, the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) and the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Sulaiman said only two, namely Iskandar Malaysia and NCER, appeared to be successful.

"There is a need to analyse the sources of success of Iskandar and NCER and how they can be used to develop and improve the other three corridors," he told reporters after taking part in a forum on the sustainable development of economic corridors here today.

Sulaiman opined that for Sabah, the entire state could not become a corridor, while the area of ECER, which comprises several states, was too big.

The weaknesses needed to be identified, he said.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority chief executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, who was also a panellist at today's forum, said Iskandar Malaysia's size had more than doubled (up 140 per cent) from 2,217 sq km during its inception to 4,749 sq km now.
