MELAKA, July 3 (Bernama) -- About 3,740 students in 10 public universities in the country have benefited from the Food Bank Siswa programme since it was launched in February this year.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry secretary-general Datuk Muez Abdul Aziz said the programme, conducted in collaboration with 40 supermarket operators or contributors nationwide, channels food supply to students from the B40 (low income) families.
“We are targeting for the programme to be implemented in all public universities nationwide. The government is committed to assisting students from the B40 group so that they are more focused to excel,” he told reporters after launching the Food Bank Siswa at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) here today.
He said the programme was implemented through a pantry consisting of dried food and groceries that are given to deserving students and a central kitchen, which, with the help of strategic partners, prepares and distributes meals to students.
Meanwhile, UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Raha Abdul Rahim said UTeM is the 11th public university to implement this programme, which will benefit about 200 students by the end of this year.
The food bank initiative for students is an extension of the ministry’s Food Bank Malaysia programme meant for the B40 group.
