UTM to meet with various stakeholders over MJIIT tuition fees

JOHOR BAHRU, July 10 (Bernama) -- A meeting will be held in the near future to address the issue surrounding the stark increase in tuition fees at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), which comes under the supervision of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

UTM (Academic and International) deputy vice-chancellor Prof Dr Zainuddin Abd Manan said the meeting which would involve representatives of UTM, the Education Ministry and MJIIT Voices, is hoped to consider the interests of all parties in finding a solution.

"Among the explanations that have been given is that MJIIT is a fully autonomous entity in terms of governance and finance.

They (students) also have been informed that the actual cost of pursuing non-subsidised studies at MJIIT is RM 79,868 for four years, or eight semesters.

"However, the university has agreed to cover 49 per cent of the fees, thereby reducing the fees charged to MJIIT students to RM40,000 for four years, or eight semesters," he said in a statement to Bernama today.

MJIIT Voice chairman Tan Cheng Siong was previously reported as saying that MJIIT had raised their special tuition fees from RM945 to RM5,000 for each semester, and the increase was alleged to have taken place over the past four years.
