KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has named its second littoral mission ship (LMS), Sundang at the ship's launching and naming ceremony in Wuhan, China today.

RMN in a statement said the naming ceremony was graced by Puan Seri Rusnah A. Rahman, wife of  Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Zulkifli Zainal Abidin.

The ship was named Sundang in conjunction with the patrol vessel which was decommissioned on Aug 1, 2005.

"It was called ‘Sundang” after a traditional Malay weapon which symbolises the spirit of heroism, struggle, courage and strength in opposing and repelling enemy attacks, very much like the keris," the statement said.

Sundang is the second ship after the Keris in the 11th LMS Squadron and the remaining two will be launched in mid 2020.

"LMS is capable of carrying out patrol duties, maritime surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), as well as enforcing Malaysian maritime law," the statement said.

The vessel will undergo several phases of preparation and testing before being handed over to TLDM in April 2020 and the crew is expected to undergo familiarisation training at the end of this year in China.
