SONGKHLA, July 15 (Bernama) – The Thai police rescued 57 Myanmar nationals, including six women, believed to be human trafficking victims, at a transit home here pending their smuggle into Malaysia.
Hatyai district police chief Col Kittichai Sangkatavorn said acting on information, a police team conducted a raid at the house in Khuan Lang, Hatyai, at about 6 pm (local time) yesterday.
“After opening the door, police were shocked to find the victims cramped together in the house. They were believed to have been in Thailand for six days and were waiting to be smuggled into Malaysia.
“A 40-year-old Myanmar national, believed to be the caretaker of the house, was detained for investigation,” he told reporters here today.
Sangkatavorn said according to the caretaker, he was paid 11,000 baht since seven months ago to take charge of the house and bring in Myanmar nationals into Thailand by smuggling them through Ranong-Chumporn to Songkhla.
