LANGKAWI, Jan 7 -- The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2020, which raised its curtain today, has the distinction of being the first international-level sports programme to be held in the country in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020).
Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) executive director Datuk Azlan Abdullah said the event, which entered its 18th edition, was a special one for Langkawi, which is among the major tourist destinations in Malaysia.
"We are proud to be the first VM2020 programme, and what's interesting is that a total of 29 local and foreign teams from 13 countries will be competing this time. Initially, there were 30 teams but one had to withdraw due to unavoidable circumstances.
"Although the number of entries has decreased compared to the previous year, we are proud of the fact that for the first time, the RLIR will feature an all-women team from Malaysia," he told reporters at RLYC here today.
Azlan said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was expected to attend the closing ceremony and present the Prime Minister's Cup to the winners of the Racing class event at RLYC on Saturday (Jan 11).
The competition features seven categories, namely Racing, IRC 1, IRC 2, Sportboat, Cruising, Multihull and White Sail.
