Police detectives in plainclothes to monitor tourists' safety for VM2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 -- The Kuala Lumpur police will use the service of detectives and set up a special operations room to assist the Tourist Police Unit (UPP) in ensuring the safety of tourists in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020).

City police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said police detectives in plainclothes would be stationed at 73  tourist locations, as well as  hotspots for street crimes, such as robbery and snatch theft, in the federal capital and Putrajaya.

He said among the hotspot locations in the city are Dataran Merdeka, Bukit Bintang and Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). 

"The team will also monitor CCTVs (closed-circuit cameras) in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya to ensure the safety of tourists," he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters  here today.

Mazlan said the UPP members would carry out their patrol beats on foot, bicycle and motorcycle, as well as using patrol cars.

On the crime index for last year, Mazlan said there was a dropped by 4.4 per cent in cases involving foreign tourists, totaling 508 from 607 cases in 2018.

The Kuala Lumpur police crime index also dropped by 7.85 per cent, from 12,124 cases in 2018 to  11,172 cases last year, he added.
