SOHOM donates RM15,000 for Sekolah Semangat Maju Taiping

TAIPING, Jan 29 -- The Association of Spouses of Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Malaysia (SOHOM) recently presented a donation of RM15,000 to Sekolah Semangat Maju Taiping, a school for intellectually disabled children.

The cheque for the donation was presented by the president of SOHOM, Triana Nechytaylo, to the school's chairman, Joseph Lau Tee Sun.

Triana, who is the spouse of Ukraine's Ambassador to Malaysia, Olexander Nechytaylo, said the donation is intended to enable the school to carry out a variety of beneficial activities as well as repair works for the school's building. 

"We had successfully organised the International Charity Bazaar 2019 last November and collected (from charity sale) about RM140,000 to be channeled to needy groups.

"We also give donations to other seven institutions in this country in need of funds, and will try to give to as many institutions as we can,"  she said, adding that the Embassy of Poland in Malaysia has been supporting the school for some time. 

Embassy of Poland's Cultural Affairs Officer Jo Anna E.Jurczyga said the (Poland) embassy has been organising events in Taiping for the last 10 years – like musical concerts and tree-planting programmes –in support of Taiping's community at large.

Meanwhile, the school's principal, Jagjit Kaur, expressed her appreciation for the contribution made by SOHOM.

"We will use the money raised to improve the 80-year-old school building,” she said.

She said the school, which has been operating for 30 years, has more than 100 students between the ages of three and 22 and has 10 teachers.
