OIC, US engage in first round of strategic dialogue

JEDDAH, May 24 (Bernama) -- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United States (US) launched the first two-day round of the strategic dialogue in Washington to discuss issues of mutual interest, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

OIC Secretary-General Hissein Ibrahim Taha stressed that the first round of the strategic dialogue with the US comes in timely when the world is facing enormous challenges that require strengthening dialogue, cooperation and solidarity to maintain peace, security, and understanding promote development.

He added that the organisation encourages its member states to engage in dialogue to defuse tensions and conflicts and resolve them peacefully.

On May 19, OIC issued a statement saying Hissein as to visit the US on May 20 to hold a series of meetings with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and senior US State Department officials.

The Secretary-General will discuss with US officials a wide spectrum of topics of shared interest, from political issues to counterterrorism, the prevention of extremism and Islamophobia, human rights, climate change, women’s empowerment and health issues, according to SPA.

Hissein’s visit comes within the context of the first leg of a tour of strategic dialogues between the OIC and US to address common global challenges through reinforced partnership and bilateral cooperation between the two sides.
