CHUKAI, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- Residents in Kemaman, an area blessed with natural resources, are hoping that it will undergo a modern transformation, especially in the economic field, and open up more job opportunities for youth.
Voters, especially want balanced development in Kemaman, like in Kuala Terengganu which is seen to be more advanced.
"We, villagers, especially in the Air Putih constituency, hope that there will be more jobs for youth…. The younger generation is no longer interested in working in oil palm plantations.
“So I hope the new government elected in the 15th general election (GE15) will create more suitable and more modern jobs for youth,” he told Bernama.
Fellow villager, Laidin Rahim, 58, concurred, saying that even though there were many facilities for oil and sea-based industries in the district, jobs for youth were still scarce.
"Initiatives such as modernising the fishing industry, upgrading tourism locations on the coast can open up new potential for young jobseekers, and boost the local economy," he said.
Meanwhile, trader Zahari Abdul Aziz, 56, suggested that any leader elected should focus on the welfare of small traders by providing more conducive business sites.
"Many traders here make a living by the roadside because there are no sites provided for them to do business….this is risky and endangers their safety," he said.
The Kemaman parliamentary constituency is one of the hottest seats in Terengganu, as former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said will make his parliamentary debut to take on incumbent Che Alias Hamid of PAS, Hasuni Sudin (Pakatan Harapan) and Rosli Ab. Ghani (Pejuang).
In GE14, Che Alias defeated Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek (BN) and Mohd Huzaifah Md Suhaimi (PH) with a majority of 2,163 votes.
