Periodic Review Needed For Public Sector AI Guidelines Implementation

28/02/2025 11:49 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- The government and relevant authorities have been urged to conduct periodic reviews of the Public Sector AI Adaptation Guidelines, to ensure their continued relevance in addressing future challenges.

Association of Internet-of-Things Malaysia treasurer Pathmanathan Muniandy said the guidelines could not only optimise the efficiency of the public sector, but also play an important role in protecting the rights of the people, by ensuring that the use of AI is based on ethics and principles of transparency.

According to him, the guidelines must include strict monitoring mechanisms to prevent any misuse of the technology.

“For instance, continuous monitoring of AI applications in health and security is vital, as errors in data processing could have significant consequences for the public.

“The implementation of these guidelines should not end with their publication, but must be reinforced through ongoing monitoring,” he said in a statement, today.

Pathmanathan also stressed the importance of continuous training for civil servants, to ensure that they understand AI technology more deeply, and the effects of its use.

“To achieve this, the government must invest in AI training and skills development programmes, to ensure civil servants remain well-versed in the latest advances. This will enable them to apply AI more efficiently and responsibly,” he said.

He further emphasised the need for collaboration between the public and the private sector to develop a resilient AI ecosystem. By sharing expertise, both sectors can accelerate technology transfer and ensure that AI innovations are effectively utilised.

“AI’s ability to process information rapidly can not only reduce bureaucracy, but also enhance the quality of government service delivery. Ultimately, this will strengthen public trust in the country’s administrative system,” he added.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo launched the guidelines yesterday (Feb 27) to assist government agencies in adopting AI technology responsibly.

The 158-page document provides an overview of AI, ethical principles, stakeholder roles and responsibilities, risk management, adaptation methods, and self-assessment templates to help agencies evaluate AI’s scope and impact within the public sector.
