Ras Al Khaimah Ruler Highlights Science's Role Towards Sustainable Future At IWAM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi opened the 16th International Workshop on Advanced Materials (IWAM), emphasising science’s pivotal role in achieving a sustainable future.

Delivering an opening keynote address on the first day of the three-day IWAM, Sheikh Saud who is also the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Supreme Council Member reiterated Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to advancing scientific research, especially in materials that could transform energy, transportation, and manufacturing.

“Science must be the bedrock upon which we build a sustainable and prosperous future, with our younger generations playing an active role in furthering our pursuit of knowledge,” said Sheikh Saud in a statement.

Currently in its 16th year, IWAM brings together more than 200 attendees from over 20 countries, including scientists, students and speakers, for lectures, discussions and poster sessions on how advanced materials are helping to shape the future.

The forum is attended by scientists from prestigious academic institutions, such as the universities of Cambridge and Oxford (the United Kingdom), and the University of California and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (the United States).

IWAM also sees scientists awarding the student winners of the Ras Al Khaimah Innovation and Sustainability Challenge, which comprises seven competitions to develop innovative solutions to real-life challenges.

During the forum, a scientific session for high-school students also took place, while scientists visit Ras Al Khaimah-based companies to highlight how advanced materials can be utilised to improve productivity.
