JAKARTA, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The newly appointed Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, Tan Sri Othman Hashim, met with ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn on Friday to discuss the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

The two officials discussed the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus, including efforts to improve the delivery of humanitarian aid to Myanmar’s people amid ongoing challenges, according to the ASEAN Secretariat.

During the discussion, Kao congratulated Othman on his recent appointment and reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to supporting the Special Envoy in fulfilling his mandate.

The meeting at the ASEAN headquarters here, was attended by Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to ASEAN, Ambassador Datin Sarah Al Bakri Devadason.

On Feb 7, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said in the Malaysian Parliament that Othman has begun his duties and was in Myanmar, meeting with various parties.

The minister pointed out that the Troika mechanism, introduced during Indonesia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2023, continues to play a pivotal role, with Malaysia serving as the current chair.

Mohamad also mentioned the positive outcomes from efforts with China, including a ceasefire agreement signed between the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Myanmar junta.

However, he reiterated that significant challenges remain and must be addressed through careful and strategic engagement.
