LABUAN, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) has improved Labuan port operations, service efficiency and competitiveness to meet the logistical needs of clients.

Its chief operating officer, Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong, said the improvement in cargo handling is a priority to the port operation despite less cargo handling.

He said the cargo handling speed and performance has seen a steady improvement with 18 to 25 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) per hour.

“We must prove to the government, especially to the Ministry of Transport, that MPM is able to perform better in the interest of Labuan’s economy and the port users,” he told Bernama today.

He said Labuan port had recorded a container handling of 7,538 TEUs from January up to July 2022.

Tiong said the trend of container handling has been fluctuating from early this year due to the volume of export.

“We cannot expect the export volume to be steady as it boils down to the supply and demand factor.

“Importantly, MPM must always be on track in its performance as we must constantly improve the speed in the container handling,” he said.

According to Tiong, MPM is focusing on efforts to regain the confidence of shipping liners, particularly on its performance in container handling.

“The port operation had been badly hit by the lockdown measures, and now the port has started seeing an increase in arrival and cargo handling.

“We want to see more vessels calling at the port in the next two months, so as we can have the economic spillover on this duty-free island,” he said.

Tiong also said  MPM has spent more than RM2 million to resurface the open yard for the containers and iron fencing around the port.
