22/10/2022 01:29 PM

JAKARTA, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- British politician Ed Vaizey was appointed chairman of the UK-ASEAN Business Council, replacing Baroness Lucy Neville-Rolfe,  to connect the growing opportunities in Southeast Asia with British business.

The council said in a statement, Vaizey, 54, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role at an exciting time in United Kingdom (UK)-ASEAN relations.

He was the UK government's longest-serving culture and digital minister from 2010 to 2016 and served as a trade envoy to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos between 2017 and 2019.

On his appointment, Vaizey said ASEAN is expected to be the fourth largest economy in the world by 2030 with a population of over 700 million, mainly young and digitally connected.

“The region’s digital economy alone is on track to grow to £900 billion (RM4.82 trillion) by 2030.

“I’m looking forward to working with British business and His Majesty’s Government to ensure that the UK is a key partner to the region’s growth,” he said.
