05/03/2024 09:56 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 (Bernama) -- Gamalux Sdn Bhd’s commitment to a sustainable, renewable-focused, environmental, social and governance (ESG)-driven business for a greener future is a beacon for others to follow, said Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

He said that in addition to sustainability certifications, Gamalux, a leading player in the downstream oil palm industry, has taken a bold step forward by initiating ESG reporting in 2023.

“This forward-looking approach sets the stage for future endeavours, such as synergising business operations for carbon credit projects,” he said in his keynote address at the Gamalux Business Dinner 2024 here today.

The dinner was held amidst the 35th Palm & Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference & Exhibition (POC2024).

The event was attended by the High Commissioner of Pakistan in Malaysia, Syed Ahsan Raza Shah, as well as the industry leaders, and partners from around the globe.

Chan said as Malaysia embarks on its journey towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 through the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the National Agricommodity Policy (DAKN 2030) “Promoting Biofuels as a Source of Clean Energy” and the National Biomass Action Plan 2023-2030 (NBAP2030) “Scaling up the Circular Economy Through Agricommodity Biomass”, Gamalux’s business activities closely align with the nation’s environmental aspirations.

“The ministry is committed to supporting and collaborating with companies like Gamalux. We recognise the synergy between government bodies, agencies, and responsible corporations, and together, we strive for positive and productive results,” he added.

Gamalux, which will mark its three-decade journey this year, remained committed to sustainability and renewable energy initiatives.

Managing director and chief executive officer Usman Ahmed said the company’s focus remains on providing sustainable opportunities for industry leaders to promote biodiversity and empowering customers to enhance their positive carbon footprint.

“In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, Gamalux is committed to Malaysia’s pledge of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Gamalux proudly holds the position as Malaysia's top feedstock producer for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO) industries.

“Our certified feedstocks not only comply with all relevant laws and regulations but also play a crucial role in supporting Fortune 500 clients and palm oil industry players worldwide in reaching their sustainability objectives,” he said.

Established in 1994, he said Gamalux has been dedicated to fostering a circular economy, a commitment that has proven crucial in navigating the volatile palm oil industry.

“Our initiatives in renewable energy have garnered attention across the industry, and we owe our success to the unwavering support of our business associates, clients, vendors, service providers, and all the oil palm-related associations in Malaysia,” he said.

Gamalux will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Aug 18, 2024.

Usman also shared Gamalux’s upcoming initiatives, including the Solvent Extraction Plant which is set for commercial run by the third quarter of 2024 (3Q 2024) at Pulau Indah, Port Klang, Selangor, and the planned construction of the first oleochemical facility at POIC Lahad Datu as well as the expansion of existing Oleochemical plant at Port Qasim, Karachi in 2025.

Usman said the upcoming oleochemicals plant at POIC Lahad Datu will be the first oleochemical plant in Borneo and Gamalux aims to boost production for export to China, Japan and South Korea by 120,000 tonnes annually.

He said the Pulau Indah plant, strategically located near Port Klang (Westports), acts as a pivotal hub in a vibrant network of raw material suppliers from Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatera, enhancing logistical efficiency and fostering collaboration within the region.

“These expansions signify our dedication to meeting the growing demands of the industry while adhering to the highest standards,” he said.
