KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- Popular chain store Oriental Kopi has received its halal certification by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), its managing director Datuk Calvin Chan said.

He described the certification as a momentous and meaningful occasion for the company, as it was a very challenging process.

"We faced various challenges and obstacles throughout this journey and while it seems easy to say in a speech, the overall process, from initial preparations to every detail of daily operations can be very tough.

"We not only have to meet the food safety and stringent premise cleanliness standards, but also understand and respect the religious and cultural values upheld in the halal certification,” he said in a statement here today.

Oriental Kopi's halal certification was presented in a ceremony held at its Suria KLCC branch.

Also present were Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, Tengku Hishammuddin Zaizi, HQC Commerce Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Khairul Shahril Hamzah and chief operating officer Muhamad Khairi Kamarudin.

Chan said the coffeeshop's Suria KLCC, KLIA2 arrival and departure hall outlets have received halal certification from Jakim.

He also shared the company’s intention to open 15 branches throughout the country in the next three years to enable more customers to enjoy Oriental Kopi’s authentic local dishes.

"The company aims to open seven additional branches, including in Gurney Plaza, Penang and Viva City Mall, Sarawak as well as our first restaurant abroad in Singapore this year.

“We have managed to export our white coffee to Hong Kong this month and hope to introduce the world to many more Oriental Kopi products in the future,” Chan said.

Oriental Kopi, which was set up four years ago, currently has 14 branches in Malaysia and offers 21 halal products, including white coffee, drip coffee, kaya, peanut butter and sambal, which are available at major supermarket chains such as Aeon, Aeon Big, Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer, Mercato, Giant and Watsons.

Oriental Kopi is also the first coffee brand selected to be sold at Watsons.
