SINGAPORE, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The 2nd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) starting today in Sentosa here aims to foster the exchange of knowledge and future collaborations among the region’s industry players and experts in the field of battery technology.
The three-day event is hosted by the Singapore Battery Consortium and co-organised by NanoMalaysia Bhd, Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA), Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute and National Centre for Sustainable Transportation Technology, and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines.
Themed “Powering ASEAN, Innovating the Future of Battery,” this year’s ABTC has attracted over 320 participants from 16 countries and features discussions on battery safety regulations, cell-to-pack technologies, and recycling strategies across ASEAN, among others.
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority deputy chief executive (technology) Lam Wee Shann said in his opening remarks that the conference came at an important time with Singapore striving towards net zero emissions by 2050.
“Battery is the most expensive component of electric vehicles (EV), but it's also a component that is used in many other applications and sectors beyond land transport.
“On our end, we are also very keen to see how we can collaborate with the industry,” he said.
ABTC co-chairman and TESTA president Dr Pimpa Limthongkul said the conference brings together key stakeholders in battery technology development in the region to align and continue collaborating towards building a strong energy ecosystem.
“The development of sustainable battery technology in Southeast Asia is pivotal for the region’s long-term energy security. By prioritising sustainability, we not only drive innovation but also ensure that our progress contributes to a healthier planet,” she said in a statement.
The 1st ASEAN Battery and Electric Vehicle Technology Conference in Bali, Indonesia, last year saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between six leading associations and organisations in the region, including NanoMalaysia, to explore research and development collaboration.
Through the MoU, the parties intend to jointly develop and promote an ASEAN battery ecosystem that will facilitate the growth of the battery industry in the region.
Hosting of the ABTC is rotated among the co-organisers. In 2025, TESTA will host the conference in Thailand.
